Peter & Emajean Cook
Peter C. Cook was a man who believed that success was not a destination, but a tool to be used for the greater good. Born in Grand Rapids, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of West Michigan's most influential business leaders. As the owner of Import Motors and later Mazda Great Lakes, Peter demonstrated an uncanny ability to navigate the business world with integrity and foresight.
However, business was simply the engine that powered his true passion: stewardship. Alongside his beloved wife, Emajean, Peter viewed their accumulated wealth as a divine responsibility. Emajean, a woman of quiet strength and profound faith, was the heart of their philanthropic vision. Together, they operated under a simple yet powerful biblical principle: "To whom much is given, much is expected."
The Cooks were not merely check-writers; they were partners. They believed in investing in people and institutions that shared their values of hard work, Christian faith, and community service. Their generosity was not about naming rights—though their name now graces many of the region’s finest buildings—it was about creating spaces where lives could be transformed.
From the earliest days of the Foundation established in 1987, their focus remained steadfast on three pillars: Education, Healthcare, and Evangelism. They understood that a healthy community requires a healthy soul, a healthy body, and a sharp mind.
Although Peter and Emajean have passed on, the Foundation stands as a living testament to their love for Grand Rapids. The Cook Hall at the Van Andel Institute accelerates cancer research; the Cook Center at Hope College nurtures the minds of future leaders; and countless other grants support the arts and ministry work across the city.
Today, the Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees committed to honoring the original intent of the Founders. We continue to ask the question Peter and Emajean asked themselves daily: "How can we best serve our neighbors today?"
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
